What?

This is a collection of obvious and not so obvious targets you may visit. No matter how long you stay, you will not have enough time to see everything, so I would recommend not to try to „see as much as possible“. If you do your tours with Relaxation you will have a great time. If you can, come at the weekdays – less people, more relaxing.

How?

Google Maps…

The following „Maps“-Links will show you where the place is, and often reviews, photos, a homepage-link, the menu for restaurants, and you can also plan a route. Remember, a route is „live“ – it is calculated at the time you click the link, and many routes are different / not possible in the evening hours or weekends. You can set a day & time in Google Maps, which might be helpful if you plan something in the evening before.

Smartphone App…

I found an app for smartphones which could be quite helpful to explore Hamburg: http://www.hamburg-tourism.de/infos/mobile-angebote/hamburg-app/
I haven’t tested it myself so far, but it seems to be good since it even gets positive reviews from people living in Hamburg. One interesting feature is that it can announce things while you move and give infos on it. Maybe it can even replace a guide? Personally I don’t like guided tours so much since it is too much blah-blah for me – my brain reports after 3 minutes an „exception buffer overflow error“. 😉 But of course, it’s a matter of taste – guided tours may be entertaining and informative for you.

Bicycle…

City railways and busses are a good way to explore Hamburg, but you may even consider to use a bicycle. You can drive any route want, stop any time where you want, and you are much faster than walking. Bicycle rentals:

Alsterlake & City Canals / Alster & Fleete

Harbor / Hafen

  • A nice starting point for harbor exploration, via Altona, instead of Landungsbrücken.

Wilhelmsburg

Pflugacker to S Wilhelmsburg: Route

Wilhelmsburg is multi-cultural and on a relatively small area a wild mix of water + industry + village + city + old & shabby + new & shining.
Tip: rent a bike… Fahrradverleih in Wilhelmsburg (also guided tours). Beside the „mix-factor“ I really like that many streets have lots of big trees – looks very nice and is colder in summer than naked houses.

  • Energiebunker: Maps (a bunker from the second world war, now used for energy-purposes)

    • And then just a few meters away, a nice/interesting area: Route
    • At the end, some cream:
      • You could walk 1,0 Km from station „Stübenplatz“ to ferry „Ernst August Schleuse“, to get to Landungsbrücken: Route. Or…
      • You could walk 3,5 Km from station „Stübenplatz“, over district Steinwerder, to station „Theater im Hafen“, and take a ferry there to get to Landungsbrücken: Route. Or…
      • You could walk 4,6 Km from station „Stübenplatz“ over discrict Steinwerder, and walk thru the old Elbtunnel, then walk to Landungsbrücken: Maps.

  • BIG bridge: Köhlbrandbrücke (for cars/bus only). By bus, but only 1x hour (Fahrplan):
